Think of One is to me the most exciting band of the entire scene. David Bovée knows very well how to play the guitar, and he knows how to find melodies and rhythms with instant appeal, even though they aren't that evident at all. Think of One is all about 'having a good time': for the members as well as for the audience, their concerts can be described with one word: 'fun'. There are many people who contribute or have contributed to the music of Think of One. In fact, it is more of a collective than a band. The 'core members' are David Bovée (guitar and vocals), Roel Poriau (drums) and Tomas DeSmet (bass, drums and vocals). Together, they also form the band Punkistan. On Juggernaut there's also Bhaija Marakchi Abdellah contributing with all kinds of non-European instruments (djembe, dubouka, conga, ...), Bart Maris on trumpet and Eric Morel on saxophones, flute and clarinet. Other contributors to the first CD are Anja Kowalski, the four members of Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung, Benjamin Boutreur, Tom Theuns, Wouter Vandenabeele, Stephen Duncan, Gabor Voros, Jan Peeters and Boris De Handschutter. On the second and fourth CD, Think of One is joined by the Marrakech Emballages Ensemble, a band from Morocco. As I understand it, the Marrakech Emballages Ensemble is a Moroccan kind of Think of One: they're not an ordinary folk band in their own country. The combination of different musical styles like Gnawa (traditional guitar music) and B'Net (women singing) is very unusual. The Marrakech Emballages Ensemble exists of Amina Tkerkich (chant, Bendir), Lalabrouk Loujabe (Chant, Nakkous), Abdelkebir Bensalloum (Chant, sentir, karkabo) and Hassan Markhi (chant, violin, oud, derbouka). Please don't ask me what all the instruments are. For the Third CD (Naft), Think of One turned into a fanfare. Eric Morel and Bart Maris are reinforced by the fantastic Tobe Wouters (sousaphone/ bombardon). Also on the CD are Jan Peeters (baritone sax), Benjamin Boutreur (tenor and alto sax), Gert Weininks (soprano sax), Tom Pintens (clarinet, organ), The 'Maskesmachien' Barbara Van Hoestenberghe and Liesbeth Swings (Vocals) and of course Stoffel Verlackt with backing vocals on Een Dooi Vogeltje. Tom Wouters (clarinet) was seen during at least one concert but does not appear on the CD. Because Naft is sometimes a walking fanfare, Tomas takes care of percussion instead of standing bass, although he has been known to walk along playing the large instrument. |
