I've just come back from the Nijdrop in Opwijk, where Zita Swoon played the best gig I've seen this year ! Although the whole band was obviously quite tired, I think they wanted to give their best for the end of the '98 tour. And they did show us what they can do !

The show was a complete success from beginning to - especially - end. They played lots of Moondog tunes, loads of songs unknown to me, and of course lots from IPPOAWD. I have to say lots, loads & lots since I think they played 22-23 songs, for 2 full hours. All songs were very different from the album versions, especially the older ones, and Disco! which is played much faster but lasts a bit longer.

During the first encore, they began an impro who eventually turned into Ragdoll Blues (Double Zero version :), after which they played The Ricochet. And then it happened : a crazy man climbed onto the stage, stole a mike and began singing along !!! But Zita Swoon didn't seem to be bothered. I was surprised when after that song they covered dEUS' W.C.S., and the "guest" sang that one very well ! He knew it fully by heart and had a nice voice, so it was OK. The guy left before ZS began playing Stamina.

There was a second encore with Jintro & the great luna (ultra funny lyrics involving a weather report :) and I just can't remember what they ended with. But Bart will help you since he could take a setlist.

I think the man was Tom Barman, btw :)) . Die, you perfid jealous !!! And Klaas was there, too, though he didn't think his violin would be of any help, so he merely attended the gig, I think.

About 24h later I was standing in front of Mathieu again. The day before he surprised me with his musique, but two days in a row was a bit too much I'm afraid. I did feel a bit sorry for him, because they audience didn't really give him a chance. The "Billy the Kid" song with the Dutch intro is quite funny, actually.
All the cardboards on stage were looking the wrong wayso the band had to turn them during the show (which wasn't that easy because the stage of the Nijdrop is not that big). This time Aarich put on a record (anyone knows who it was?). Got Stef's setlist, so here it is:

- Moondance
- How could I resist?
- Impro to Buckley
- The rabbit field
- The French trombone
- One perfect day
- Disco!
- Maria
- Our daily reminders
- Jo's wine song
- Good times & a twinkle in your eye
- Manwolf
- Ragdoll blues
-----------------------------------
- Worst Case Scenario (with Tommy again)
- Stamina
- Moondog
-------------------------------------
- Ice guitars
- Andy

But the actual gig was a bit different. Before Worst Case they played 'the ricochet' with Tommy doing an impro at the end of the song. 'Ice guitars' and 'Andy' weren't played either. Instead we heared Jintro (piano version) with some impro (which screwed up the song I think) and She=like meeting Jesus.
I do not know what it was, but I think the AB-concert was way better. Stef looked rather tired, and not really motivated. In Brussels Stef started Ragdoll on guitar, very intimate. In Opwijk Stef didn't play guitar during the song and I just didn't like this version. I guess Stef was releived that this was the last concert of the Belgian tour. Maybe I was a bit spoiled because I saw Tommy allready the day before, so I wasn't surprised to see him doing Worst Case together with Stef again (I guess some of you would have died to see this). I think this was a really great way to end 1998, don't you think? See you in February @ Tivoli ! (and in March it's dEUS time again !!!)

Yesterday, me (Thomas), Bart Van Belle and Kevin Moens (all mailinglist people) went to the Zita Swoon concert in Nijdrop, Opwijk. We arrived at 19u30. Doors were still closed. Stef's dog (fuck, i forgot his name, isn't it Sammy ?), was barking at the other side of the door. The girls next to us were making fun of him. That's when the dog ran away, we never saw him back till after de show under guidance of his master, the one and only Stef Kamil.
At 20h, the doors went open, we were in as the first people and could stand in the front row. Matthieu, the support act started at 21u. He played for a 30 minutes.

Zita Swoon entered the stage at 21u45. They started with a strange record. This was the playlist

Moondance
How could i resist
Song for a dead singer
The Rabbit Field
TV Song
The French Trombone
One Perfect Day
Disco
Maria
Our Daily Reminders
Jo's Wine Song
Good Times
Manwolf
Jesus
Ragdoll Blues
-------------
Worst Case Scenario (with Tom Barman !!!!!)
Stamina
Moondog
-------------
Jintro and the great luna (album version)
Ice Guitars

The show started with Moondance, an 'oldie'. The rest of the show was based on IPPOAW but the higlight was the performance of somebody named Tom Barman (some friend of Danny Mommens, people told me) during Ragdoll Blues en a cover of Worst Case Scenario. It was great ! Only Tom was again dressed like a homeless, but then he was drinking orange juice (or was it vodka orange). At the end of Worst Case Scenario he added some lines about people who want to fuck him up and spread rumours about him.

Tom left the stage, the band played on. In the third encore, Stef played Jintro solo on piano. He was tired and wanted to leave after that song, but Tom Pintens and Aarich were on stage before he could leave and so they had to play another song.

After the concert the whole audience screamed for more, but they didn't come back. We stayed there for another two hours and saw also Klaas Janszoons and Tom accompanied by some nice girl. But we don't want to spread rumours, as we don't want to be part of another WCS Version :-). We also met Jean Yves who recorded the whole show. The band was talking to some people they knew, Stef came later with his dog who was obviously looking for a place to pee. So Stef took him out for a walk.

We could take some posters of Zita Swoon for free. Then we went away and drove to our local pub for some more drinking ! Then the police entered and we had to throw everything on the ground : our fluid heroine and xtc and also our zita - posters and then we were arrested. It's a sad, sad planet.
