Melkweg, Amsterdam, Netherlands 28/10/95
Support act for Bettie Serveert (?)

by MARIA TECHNOSUX, provided by JACOB VAN DER MEULEN

It was the first time I saw them, so all their songs were unfamiliar to me. One song was very REM-ish, it sounded like they were doing an Everybody Hurts-cover. I tried to sing the REM song through the Mad Dog Loose song, and it sounded very good! Another song was yet very country-like. So you probably understand that they have a huge variety of different songs. Watching them play, I thought: "This must be what it was like when dEUS were playing in the Melkweg for the first time, supporting Morphine". But now that I've heard them many times I don't think they sound like dEUS at all. Their support gig was very OK and that's wat matters, right? Too bad the rest of the people weren't very interested. After the gig, me and Ann ( a girl who was with me) went to the Melkweg cinema to watch "Pret-a-Porter", what a boring film! |-x

Support act 2 (yes, another one!): STEREOLAB Hey guys! Mister BECK really likes this band. So they must be great, fab, brrrilliant! Well, they are not. At least, not always. Their songs are quite long (they can do 4 songs in 23 minutes) and heavily inspired by the German band CAN. So they make monotonous spacy (sometimes) one-chord songs. They also played some, let's say, personal interpretations of disco-songs. Some were sung in French by singer Lealita. I liked the CAN-inspired songs the most.

Tatatatataaa! And then, it was time for: MOONDOG JR! Moondog junior came up at a quarter past twelve. By then, the place was jammed, and it wasn't even sold out! It was practically inpenetrable! (Voor de Villa 65 luisteraars onder ons: ik zag zelfs Edwin Briemen binnenlopen als een schim. Zou je niet van hem verwachten, he? He doesn't like anything!) At the balcony, every place was taken too. I couldn't go anywhere else, so I just stood on a table next to the soundboard. Tom Barman was there too, kissing some people and refusing to give autographs to the girlies. :-) This according to Ann, I myself know nothing about it. He was also giving instructions to the soundboardguy.

The first Moondog Jr song was LOVE IS A HEAVY BRICK (I thought that the record-version was better.) Other songs they played were MOONDOG (second song), MOONDANCE, JINTRO & THE GREAT LUNA (the fast, happy version that I hate so hard!) LOVE 609 (encore), THE RICOCHET (encore), CACHITA, TV SONG, JO'S WINE SONG (the live version was so much better than the record version!), ICE GUITARS, RAG ROLL BLUES, JACKY, HABIBI OULDI (why is this one a B-side? It should have been on a record, it's so beautiful!) and some songs that aren't on Everyday I Wear A Greasy Black Feather On My Hat. Most of them were about drinking lots of alcohol. Burrps!!! The first time I saw Stef performing (with dEUS) I thought he was a very sulky poo-faced git. | -( But in the Melkweg, he was as pleased as Punch. What a vivid young man. He dances in a very spastic way, and would even portray the lyrics with his hands. My mother (yes! She was at the gig too! Cool, isn't it? :-) ) said: "He was dancing like an Indian, a shaman!" Geez, gimme a break! More like an apeman to me: The Neanderthaler Blues! :-) CACHITA was the highlight of the show. t was so dark and spooky! It was done in a beautiful version that was one thousend times better than the record version. I completely forgot where I was. What a drug! The end was one big impro, a very nice one! Tom Barman was dancing so wild, the whole soundboard and the table with me on it was shaking! EARTHQUAKE! The next joke I have to write down in Dutch, 'cuz it's too obscure if you aren't familiar with Dutch TV. Er was een lange pauze. De bandleden liepen heen en weer met elkaar te praten. Stef liep naar de mic en zei: "Het volgende nummer, na de STER!" :-) Iedereen lachte. Tom (not the barman, but Pintens) vatte hem niet en Stef herhaalde hem. Toen moest Tom keihard lachen, zo van "WHUAAHAHAHA!" Wow, wat een lach! After this, Stef held a Moondog Jr T-shirt up and shouted: "Deze is te koop!" (This one is for sale!) Then he threw the shirt into the crowd. A girlie screamed: "AAAH!" and cought the T-shirt. LUCKY DOG! Let's go back to Tom (the Barman one). The cool thing was that he sang a song with Moondog Jr! Suddenly I saw him leaving the soundboard. He went backstage and then on stage. The crowd applauded for him much louder than they did for Moondog Jr. That, I did not like. | -( The song they did was an uptempo wild one, that I hadn't heard before, but I liked it very much. Tom was closing his nostrils when he was singing the chorus (that's a high-tech effecty kids!) After the show, my wother was like: "Wow, what a great show! Where's that Stef guy? I want to thank him!" I told her not to hassle him, 'cuz that would really upset him, but she wouldn't listen. She saw him outside the Melkweg, putting his stuff in the van. She walked up to him and told him how much she liked the show, and he said: "Thank you." When she told him: "Take care!" His reply was: "I do!" Let's hope so!
