Not satisfied with having toured a very big part of Holland and Belgium already Moondog Jr. added some dates to their tour. And once again they have an excellent taste for support acts, this time taking the Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung with them. I'm not going to introduce them again: just read your dEUS mail from the last week if you've forgotten already. The long time subscribers will probably also remember the supported dEUS in Apeldoorn last year. They played an absolutely fantastic set. Although they were on a big stage this time and not in a little room like in Rotterdam last week their music still sounded very warm and every detail could be heard. They played a mix of their own songs and covers, with of course a dEUS cover thrown in. The violinist told the audience the next song was from a band he was pretty sure they knew and they started a great version of Suds and Soda. It was clear they had grown quite a bit since supporting dEUS. At two or three times there were some keyboard playing and vocals added, which was a nice touch. They had an absolutely great time, and Drielagstelsel 3 was a good as the best moments of the Moondog show. They got an amazing applause and were obliged to play an encore. And suprise, suprise for this Stef and Tom joined them for a great Jintro & The Great Luna. Like expected it was the version they practised last week and that was broadcasted on dutch radio. DAA has got a cd out know and i warmly recommend it to everyone who is on this list because they just like good and original music. About ten minutes later it was time for Moondog Jr. I don't have an exact setlist but they played almost all of the album with some of the usual extra songs like Spike Smith's For All Lost Goods thrown in. It was suprising to hear them start with Ice Guitars which is normally a great song to pla at some climax moment. Jintro & The Great Luna was played again, this time with all of Moondog Jr. It was the really quick version which is on the new single. Some of the highlights included Moondog and Love Is A Heavy Brick. Stef really seemed to be having fun and was dancing franticly during every song he didn't have to play his guitar. Cachita was very nice: the lights were put low and Stef had a hat with a flashlight on it. The album opener Love 609 was also performed. The intensity of all songs was simply amazing and this was definetly the best Moondog Jr. show out of the three i've seen. And as said many times before their shows go way beyond simply playing note-for-note renditions of the album versions. Although they didn't have any new stuff compared to other shows the performance was really good. By the way it was suprising to see how little dEUS t-shirts there were in the audience. They seem to be getting a lot of fans by themselves and not simply because Stef is in dEUS. A perfect music night by two very original bands. |

Going to Utrecht and finding the venue was a total disaster. First, I lied to my mother about going to Utrecht together with Ann, when in fact I went there all by myself.(I confessed later, and ma wasn't very angry :-) I had called the venue and the bastard who answered my call told me that there were signs at the Central Train Station to show you the way to the Tivoli. This was total cock and bull: there wasn't anything! I asked some by-passers the way to the Tivoli, but they gave complex answers I couldn't remember. I tried to find the Oudekerk Gracht by myself and succeeded. But where the hell was the Tivoli? I saw some "alternative" looking kids. My intuition said: "They look like the type of crowd that goes to places like Tivoli... Maybe I should follow them." But then I thought: "No way! Get rational here! If I follow themn I might get lost!" I went back to the Station and took a cab, something I really hate. All these cab-driving bastards here are frauds. I've never met one who isn't! |-( Once I got to the venue, I saw the alternative kids again! My intuition was right after all! I paid the cab-bastard 12 guiders and went inside. The Tivoli has a capacity of 1000. Yet, it does look as big as Paradiso. It wasn't sold out, but it didn't look empty at all! I stood at the right side of the stage, next to a big black box where I hid my walkman, so that I could tape the show :-O On stage, there was also a woman with a camera that was taping the DAA show. support: Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung Something very funny went on during the DAA gig. Some 14 year old girlies were standing next to me. The moment that the clarinet-player (Han) and the violin-player (Buni) walked on stage, they started giggling. "Hmmm, I like the one with the vest better!" said one of the girlies. She meant Han, who was wearing a terrible brown vest (which he took off, later on.) The girlies all agreed that Han was the best dressed member of the group. Well, well, Han was definitely on to something here!;-) When Roel(the accordion-player) was drumming on his head du ring a song, the girlies really cracked a laugh. I was laug hing too, but not cuz of the group, but cuz of them! They were, like, the first DAA all-female fanclub! That DAA violin-player is a strange guy. During the second song (which is not on the cd, more about that later!) he was saying 'deep' things, like: "We, and the people in the audien ce, are all skeletons, with blood and flesh!" and: "We are flesh that wants to make music!" He also said: "We're here this evening, but we'd rather go away!" I really hope that I got him wrong there, or that he changed his mind eventually, cuz the Tivoli crowd was very supportive. The only problem I had, was this big lamp, that was constantly shinning into my eyes. They should have truned it off. The violin-player also said something about cds being sold. This was true. I bought one DAA cd after the show. It was quite cheap: 25 guilders instead of the usual 39-42. But the cd was definitely worth twice the price! I wouldn't like to miss this piece of music in my cd-collection! Why weren't they selling cds when they played in Amsterdam? Some girls next to me were suppriced at the nude shots of the DAA boys in the booklet. But the boys are definitely not the first to do such a thing (remember Christina from Boss Hog and PJ Harvey on Dry?) What about the pictures of Stef in drag in the Everyday I Wear...-cd? Boys will be girls will be nude will be skeletons (with blood and flesh) will make music, etc, etc. By the way: they did that beautiful version of JINTRO & THE GREAT LUNA with Tom and Stef again. Oh how lovely that is! This time, I taped it myself, total DIY recording! Great!!!:-) The Tivoli-gig was my third Moondog Jr show. Unfortunately, it was the least great show I have seen. This show was more "blues-rock" orientated while the Max-show was more "Jazz- expirimental". It just didn't shake me up. The "setlist" (=Moondog Jr don't have an actual setlist) was quite good though. They played some songs I hadn't heard before. For example: * They played BLUES FOR SAMMY. I really believe it was the first time I heard them play this wonderful song live. Is this song dedicated to Stef's dog? (Cuz it's name is Sammy. The dog's also on the "Thank You"-list of Everyday I Wear...) * They played the SPIKE SMITHS'S-song twice: with and without DAA. It was the first time I heard them do the song without DAA. They should have recorded the DAA collaboration-version too, though. * They played (big surprise!) LITTLE GHOST, which is original ly a Stef-song for dEUS. (This song is on My Sister = My Clock.) Stef played it with his guitar + a little help from Tom. * Stef did a solo-cover of a (I think) Bob Dylan song. This song is definitely not a Moondog Jr song, I've heard Heather Nova play it too. The refrain goes something like: "Ooh, I'm on fire." A guy next to me knew all the words to this song, but I was too shy to ask him which song it was. Sorry! This time Stef was using his slide. I'm a sucker for slide- guitar! The sound is huge, superior and dead intense! It just feels so good! Stef also said something about Mark Sandman from Morphine, but I couldn't hear what he was saying. They dimmed the lights again, but this time Stef was shinning into the crowd with the coalminers's light that's on the hat that he wears in the video for TV SONG. There were many colourful balloons hanging from his mic-stand. Stef took one yellow balloon that was hanging loose and threw it into the crowd (no T-shirts this time!) The balloon was bounced around a bit, then someone cought it and kept it for himself. Tom was juggling with just one bal (gee-I could do that to man!) He threw it to Aarich, who knocked it back to Tom with his head. Fun, fun, fun! Later on, Tom was palying guitar while holding his fag at the same time. Some people try so hard to be "cool", it becomes ridiculous. So Tom, please leave this type of tricks to Joe Perry! (=Aerosmith guitarist/grou pie-killer) During the show, I was standing in front of Benjamin the sax- player. He looked so angry at me! And I hadn't done anything! When I noticed him, I even felt very uncomfortable with dancing! Was this the work of that little bitch at the Max- show?! When Moondog Jr started playing LOVE IS A HEAVY BRICK, Benja min still looked so pissed at me! The pleople next to me, they were drumming to the rythm of the song, by hitting the stage with the palms of their hands. I wasn't even doing that! So why did he have such a problem with me? I really wanted to turn to the other people and tell to stop the drumming, cuz Ben looked as if he was going to beat the hell out of them, and me in particular (but he didn't! Whoa!) note: Some girl that reads my fanzine showed this review to Ben. His response was that sometimes when he's blowing that sax, his face gets sort of "transformed" and it may look as if he's angry, when in fact, he really isn't! Oh well, here you go! At the end of the show, DAA and Moondog Jr did a march through the crowd, just like the one at the Max. This didn't grab me as much as it did the first time. I climbed on stage to watch them play in the middle of the room. But after a while I noticed -big embarressment!- that my flies were open, for everyone to see! I guess this just wasn't my day! |-( |
