Anyway.. Some of us signed up for the promo version of the new ZS CD at the Plato stand, downstairs. You got a ZS poster if you did that, which you later could get signed by the band. After wandering around for a bit, and seeing a few things, a few of us (Pedro, Eduardo, Marc, Martijn, Natascha and me) were standing in the middle of the stairs, looking at a screen. On the screen you could see ZS doing what looked like a sort of a warm-up gig someplace. The screen was without sound, so we decided that having sound with it would be nice. After searching for a while, and opening some doors that said "no entrance", we saw a door that said "2 meter sessies". That is the name of a dutch TV program that features artists playing live in small rooms, usually a studio. The door we saw was a bit in the public view, so even though we were pretty sure that was where it was happening, we didn't really dare to go in. However, Natascha walked around and found a back door. We just walked in, and found ourselves amidst recording material, in other words: backstage on the 2 meter set. The actual recording was in a seperate room directly connected to the room, to which the door was open. We could now hear the sound as well, which was already cool. People did notice us walking in, but they let us stick around. Martijn actually snuck in at one point, to be in the room where they were recording, so he was there during the last couple of songs. Zita Swoon seemed to be messing around a bit, not finishing several songs, but I assume that there is enough material for a TV show. Meanwhile, we were standing next to ZS' manager, and Stef's girlfriend (she's a roadie for ZS). Pedro and Eduardo begged them to get ZS to play in Portugal. Eduardo actually offered his pants to ZS' manager to get the double-promo CD that he was holding ;-) I don't think it worked.. Eduardo was still wearing his pants for the rest of the night, at least. I'm sure the guys themselves will give some details of that conversation once they get back to Portugal. After the recording session was done, the band came out. Pedro shook Tom's hand, and Eduardo & Pedro talked to Stef. Much to the excitement of Eduardo, who was really "pumped" for the rest of the evening. They talked about his tattoos (they have the details), and asked him to say "obrigado" (hope I spelled that right), Portugese for "thank you" during the concert. ZS went downstairs for the signing session. I'm not sure who all got the complete signatures, but Marieke was certainly holding a poster with all signatures. Skipping some non-ml related stuff (like how much Martijn and I enjoyed Ilse de Lange ;-)), we get to the actual ZS gig. There were sound problems before the start. It took quite a while before everything was set up. The crowd got a little impatient, though I was told by some people I met in the train back that some of the shouts asking ZS to begin were actually DAAU.. Zita Swoon did quite an uptempo set, very different in my impression from the gig in Amsterdam. After the 3rd or 4th song, Stef thanked the crowd saying "Obrigado", much to the delight of Eduardo and Pedro. Stef was quoting a Prince song again during "Ricochet", this time it was "Darling Nikki". He also made some other brief references which were Prince-like, but it could be just my Prince-fan past that makes me explain them that way ;-) During one song, a Japanese girl wearing a red veil and a wedding dress danced onstage. Towards the end of the song, she threw rice into the crowd. Quite hard, I might add. Rice grains sure can feel hard. I discovered some 5 grains of rice in my hair after I got home. TV song was planned as the last song of the encore, but instead they did a Jacques Brel song, of which I forgot the title. Oh yeah, Stef was wearing a bra again. Well.. that's about it. Need I say that it was an interesting night? (later addition) I forgot one thing about the Crossing Border ZS gig: they played Middlewave, which was very cool. |
