Announcement in Brabants Dagblad

Sunrise, Noorderligt, Tilburg, Netherlands 13/05/97
by PAUL VAN GORP

It was a remarkable night for me as the maintainer of the Zita Swoon Homepage, but first let me give some brief comments on the show.

It was another great performance, although nothing really special happened during it. I noticed that the audience was somewhat different from the audience in Eindhoven three days before. This time, there were only the young regular concert goers; I didn't see any (as I call it) theatre audience. There was also much more noise coming from the audience. This climaxed when two or three persons in the back were having a loud conversation during a quiet part of the movie. Several people were annoyed by this and asked the boy and girl to shut up or go outside. The band heard the noise, too, but didn't pay much attention to it. Apart from this, there were no problems or any other extraordinary events during the gig.

We arrived very early in Tilburg because I thought the show would start at 20.00. Upon arrival, we saw the band enjoying the nice weather in front of the Noorderligt building. While my friends went to a bar close to the concert hall, I took the opportunity to talk to the band. Tom recognized me and introduced me to the other members of the band, who turned out to know who I was, since they had seen some print outs of the homepage. Stef was very interested in the homepage, and so we talked almost until the start of the show (which was at 21.00).

Stef turned out not to be a real expert in the field of internet and world wide web, so I first tried to explain what was meant by e-mail, web, and mailing lists. Then I had a bright moment and remembered that the Noorderligt also has a website. So, I figured that there might be a computer in the building. I proposed to show him the Zita Swoon Homepage, and he reacted very positively. We tried to arrange it, but the person who had access to the computer was not in, unfortunately. We were advised to try it again after the show.

And so we did. After Stef and I exchanged addresses, he succeeded in getting to the right person, and so we skimmed the homepage in 20 minutes or so. Stef seemed quite impressed by what he saw. It was impossible to go through everything, but still he saw some small mistakes and suggested some additions. All in all, it was too much to remember. Therefore, Stef promised to drop by somewhere in July (after the Sunrise tour), so that we can go through the entire page together. BTW: Stef is able to come by car, since he got his driving license just recently.

Of course, I took the opportunity to find out as much news as possible. Here is a list of what I remember hearing.

  • Very important: Benjamin will leave the band after the current tour.
  • He will be replaced by a guitar player. Stef mentioned his name. Unfortunately, I forgot it, but it is a Danish or Swedish sounding name.
  • Stef is also looking for a female singer to add to the band. Until now, he hasn't found one. He wants to do the show in France in the end of June in this new formation.
  • The show in France won't be a Sunrise performance, but a 'regular' show.
  • Zita Swoon will probably also play Lowlands and Pukkelpop with the Sunrise project. Possibly Reading will be added to this list of festivals. The band seemed eager to do these shows. They want to make something special out of it. They were talking about putting up a special Sunrise-tent in which the audience can be seated.
  • Christoffel from Play It Again Sam Records told me that the Sunrise album has been sold about 5000 copies. PIAS and the band are satisfied with this.
  • There are plans on releasing a second single from the album. It concerns track 24 of the album: 'Coda: a song of two humans'. If it is released, it will be somewhere in the summer.
  • Talking about the album: I asked Stef about the hidden track (no. 25). He said it was just something extra. It is just the single version of 'Couldn't she get drowned?'
  • There will be a new album later this year. Stef handed me a demo tape, but since it was not finished yet, I had to return it (snif!). Christoffel mentioned that it would be a good idea to record the album during the summer and release in September when there are not many album releases. But if Zita Swoon will do the festivals in August, then it might be better to postpone the recordings until after August. In that case, the album will be released in the winter.
  • The movie 'L'amant de maman' will be featured in VPRO's Lolamoviola.
  • I also asked Stef about the rumours about him composing for and acting in 'My angel orange'. He was very, very surprised that I knew this, and I got the impression that he didn't want it to be known. He said he refused the offer because the script was too weak.
  • The song 'Everyday I wear a greasy black feather on my hat' will be featured on the next album.
  • Zita Swoon left Island records because they wanted more freedom. Tomas suspected that Island only signed Moondog Jr. because they wanted to have full control over Stef.
  • This weeks edition of Humo Magazine includes an interview with Stef. He gave me the magazine, so a transcription of this text will follow.
I also talked to Tomas for some minutes. He told me that he had been working on the debut album of Think Of One. It will be finished this thursday (May 15). It will be presented to the press in September. After this, Think Of One will do a tour through Europe.

Then some remarks about the homepage:

  • Christoffel handed me a folder with the Belgian press releases from the last weeks. Of course, these will be added to the page as soon as I find the time to transcribe them.
  • 'Jintro travels the world in a skirt' is not released through Bang! but through Jack & Johnny Recordings (BTW: Stef promised to give a copy of the album).
  • Stef is also playing in a band called Tumbleweed or something like that.
  • He will give me more lyrics (also of some cover songs).
  • Stef will probably provide tablature of some songs.
  • 'Rub it in' which was played during Moondog's tour of last year, is a cover of Mark Sandman's second band Hypnosonics (Mark Sandman is the singer/bass player of Morphine). Moondog learned it from him during a street festival in France. Stef sang some lines of it to recollect the lyrics, which was very nice of course.

This page contains a comprehensive list of concerts by Zita Swoon and related events. Where the entry is 'clickable' there is more information or reviews to be read on a separate page. If you have any additions (dates, reviews, setlists, corrections etc) to this list, please mail me at zitareviews@mandarinmedia.com and it will included.
