Review from Zwolse Courant

Hedon, Zwolle, Netherlands 13/02/99
Supported by Matthieu Ha (cancelled)
by MARC VAN GEND

It was a great gig, one of the best I've seen lately. Hedon is a rather small venue, and although it was sold out, it was not too crowded. I was the front row, very close to Bjorn & Stef, and got a hold of the setlist afterwards:

  • Impro -> Jo's wine song
  • Resist
(How can I resist kissing her on the cheek) Terriffic song!
  • Jesus
    (She is like meeting jesus)
  • Buckley
    (Song for a dead singer)
  • Perfect day
  • Barbers
  • There's a room
(Where's my love) They didn't play this song.
  • Maria
  • Hello Melinda
Stef said this song was drawn from the 'Zita Swoon Archives'.
  • Good times
A simple song, just 3 chords (B - A# - A - A#) being repeated again and again, which seemed to de improvised for the biggest part. Definately not improvised was the part where Stef used some lines from Worst Case Scenario.
  • Jinthro and the great luna
Not on the setlist, but I think it was at this point that Stef played it, alone, on the piano, with -sometimes very funny- improvised lyrics.
  • Stamina
Again with a bit of WCS in it!
  • Disco
Great! Zwolle was added to the list of Detroit, Chicago, London and New York.
  • Trombone
  • Couldn't she
    (...get drowned)
  • Moondog
encores:
  • Guilty (Randy Newman)
  • Ragdoll blues
  • Bjorn's country song. I think it's called 'manwolf', cause that is number 17 on the setlist.

Marc wrote about Zwolle: Bjorn's country song. I think it's called 'manwolf', cause that is number 17 on the setlist.

No, that's not Manwolf, we (me and one of my friends) sort of influenced what happened.... we had written these 2 notes and put them on stage, requesting Bjorn to do his solo again. one of the notes was lying in front of Bjorn, the other in front of Stef. They noticed immediately when they went on stage, and Bjorn showed his to Stef, to which Stef replied: yeah, there's one in front of me too... then Bjorn also told Tomas. At the end of the show, (he probably was afraid Stef might forget) Bjorn took the note and put it on his lap.. and he was allowed to do his solo again :-)

Later addition by Karin:

One of the best gigs ever! an supercalifragilisticexpidelilicieux version of ragdoll blues, with 99 luftballons, walk on the wildside, i'm on fire, girl named nicky, and probably even more... OH MY GOD! I almost forgot ... TOMAS DOING STIR IT UP!!!

Stef and Tom did a Randy Newman cover (guilty) On our request, Bjorn got to do his solo again as second encore. It was so sweet.. he was afraid Stef'd forget ...

Tom climbed up on stage and played guitar from behind one of those cardboard people. Stef even climbed on the piano-chair (just to emphasize the energy of the gig!) GREAT disco too!

After the afternoon gig at Plato's it was announced that the evening concert was nearly sold out. The few tickets that were still available have probably all gone out in the hours in between, because Hedon is packed. Zita Swoon is definitely hot here!
The waiting takes long, too long really, but then Zita Swoon take the stage. Apparently the support act (Mathieu) has been cancelled, but no one is really sad about that. The concert starts off with a percussion improvisation, after which the band start playing How Can I Resist Kissing Her On The Cheeks. A setlist is included below, but I'm not sure if it's in the correct order. And I'm definitely missing some tracks, most of them improvisations or unreleased material.
However, the show is a little disappointing to me. The sound is poor and way too loud, so the little details aren't heard in the enormous guitar noise. It is funky, that's for sure. 'Funky, funky', Stef shouts at the audience, who seem to be enjoying it nevertheless.
Song For A Dead Singer is done in a hasty kind of way, really unlike the beautiful melodical way it is featured on the album. Disco! gets the crowd going, as always. Besides the unpleasant volume there is another annoying aspect. Some people in the crowd are really noisy. They think it's necessary to constantly keep shouting at the band, requesting songs (Ragdoll Blues) or just screaming all kinds of nonsense. When ZS leaves the stage I feel a little unhappy. My companions say they thought it was absolutely terriffic, the best concert they have ever seen. But it's probably just the fact that this was my sixth ZS-gig. I'm spoiled, I know. But I've seen them much better than they were today...

Setlist: 1.Best Wishes To Everybody(?)
2.How Can I Resist Kissing Her On The Cheeks
3.One Perfect Day
4.Song For A Dead Singer
5.Me And My Bond With Your And Your Planet: Disco!
6.About The Successful Emotional Recovery Of A Gal Named Maria
7.Jintro And The Great Luna (Stef solo)
8.50 Years In Dope Jittery
9.The French Trombone
10.Jo's Wine Song
Encore:
11.Walk On The Wildside/You Can't Always Get What You Want/...
12.Steer It Up (Tomas solo)
13.Love Is A Heavy Brick(??)
Encore 2:
14.Ragdoll Blues
Encore 3:
15....(Björn solo: country song)
