We went to see the Tom Barman & Guy Van Neuten gig in London. It was a fantastic gig, the best Tom Barman gig we've ever seen, even better than his performance at De Nachten 2001. It was a real novelty to hear him introduce each song in English, although he was mostly telling jokes - he was in a good mood. He kept mentioning the drum n bass music he was going to play! This gig was far more enjoyable than dEUS last time at Shepherd's Bush 3 years ago. We have taken some very decent decent photos, which will get onto www.moid.be soon. He played (from our memory and not in this order) Magnolia, Magdalena, Serpentine, Instant Street, Everybody's Weird, Riverman, Pink Moon, River, a Serge Gainsbourg song, Memory of a Free Festival, Luxury, A Captain Beefheart song (Hairy Irene?), My Funny Valentine, Roses, Little Arithmetics and Goodbye Stranger. There may have been more!! Some highlights were: listening to lots of fans whisper the lyrics to Roses while Tom was joined by SKC, playing a very intense version of the song. Loads of French speaking people singing along to the Serge Gainsbourg song, Tom introducing Luxury as a song that he worked on with CJ Bolland and that will be on the Magnus CD. Tom hoping nobody knew the David Bowie song as he was worried about singing it! The captain Beefheart song was really cool, very different to the rest of the set. He also played My Funny Valentine which makes him sound like Tres Tristes Tigres! He said Goodbye Stranger was a post ironic song so him and Stef could sing it and still be cool! He talked about playing the Nick Drake songs at De Nachten. There wasn't going to be an encore, but everyone was cheering so much he eventually came back and played two more songs - which we can't remember. In all about 90 minutes!! Absolutely great fun. Tom announced Zita Swoon's gig as well - so there are going to be a few more people turning up. It was a nice and friendly atmosphere at the Jazz Cafe - very unusual for a London gig. People even stopped talking while he sang! Having said that we think most of the audience were Belgian or French. Tom got a huge cheer when he asked if there was anyone from Belgium in the crowd! |
