'Sunrise' was in 1927 de eerste Amerikaanse produktie van de Duitse regisseur Murnau, die voordien grote bekendheid verwierf met films als 'Nosferatu' en 'Faust'. Zijn Hollywood-debuut viel meteen in de prijzen: bij de allereerste Oscar-uitreiking kreeg 'Sunrise' maar liefst vier oscars waaronder die voor Beste Actrice en Beste 'Artistic Quality of Production'. Daarna is de film steeds bejubeld als een romantisch en subliem gefotografeerd meesterwerk. 'De enige, werkelijk poëtische film die Hollywood heeft voortgebracht' ... 'een verrassender ervaring dan Citizen Kane en Casablanca' ... 'beste film aller tijden' ... zijn maar enkele van de lovende recensies.

'Sunrise', gebaseerd op de roman van Herman Sudermann, vertelt het verhaal van een jongen die zich door een vrouw uit de grote stad zodanig het hoofd op hol laat brengen dat hij plannen smeedt om zijn echtgenote te vermoorden, de hoeve te verkopen en naar de stad te verhuizen.

Gelukkig beseft hij op tijd waar hij de echte liefde kan vinden. 'Een liefdesgeschiedenis, een drama, een melodrama? 'Sunrise' is alles tegelijk en nog veel meer'.

Hoewel er meerdere initiatieven zijn geweest om opnieuw muziek te schrijven bij deze film is de opzet van dit projekt uniek. Aan Stef Kamil Carlens (ex-bassist dEUS en zanger/gitarist Zita Swoon) werd gevraagd om samen met door hem uitgekozen muzikanten muziek te componeren bij deze film. 'Bij het schrijven van de score gunden we onszelf een grote vrijheid. De muziek is immers niet ondergeschikt aan het beeld, maar beiden vormen samen een dubbelspektakel. Soms is de muziek verlegen, soms schreeuwerig uitbundig, soms triest, maar altijd is die hoopvol - net als de film zelf'. Inmiddels is de nieuwe CD ('Sunrise, a 1996 score') van Zita Swoon verschenen.

Since we returned a few days early from our holiday because of rainy weather in Italy, I was just able to visit this Sunrise performance. I already witnissed a performance of the silent movie + live soundtrack last year in Den Bosch. That was about eight months ago, so it is hard to compare both performances. But from what I remember, I think the second was slightly better.

I guess there are several reasons for this. Firstly, Den Bosch was the second time ever Moondog Jr. (as they were called in those days) did the Sunrise performance before an audience. In the mean time, I am sure that the lads have gained more experience and practice in playing the soundtrack.

Secondly, the Sunrise album is also released. This way, I was able to recognize the tunes (although I was able to listen to it only twice), whereas in Den Bosch it was the first time I got the chance to hear them. This surely helps in appreciating the performance.

Since I already knew the story of the movie, I was able to take a closer look at the band. What amazed me was the great variety in instruments. Tomas even played acoustic guitar during two 'songs' (I never saw him do this before), and Benjamin played the harmonica-like instrument, that was also used in the live performances of TV-song. I'm not sure if this also happened last year.

Most funny about this evening was the guy sitting next to me. When he sat down, I already noticed his remarkable perfume: Eau d'Alcohol. And indeed he was somewhat liberated in his comments. He made some remarks in a loud voice during the show. The band overheard it once or twice, but apart from some smiles, they paid no real attention to it.

Stef looked over his shoulder several times, as if he was checking if the people in the audience were still enjoying themselves. And yes... they were! Remarkable was the mixture of people in the audience: on the one hand, there were the usual (young) Stef-adepts, but also a number of 'elderly' (no offense intended) people could be spotted. Maybe this means that Zita Swoon is getting a wider audience, which, of course, I encourage.
