Sunrise Review After the first showing of the movie Sunrise in Brugge two days before, this was the second of few opportunities to see this interesting project. Sunrise is a silent movie from 1927 by the german director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. The members of Moondog Jr. have composed a soundtrack to it, which is played live during the showing of the movie. Because of the complexity of the music, Moondog Jr. has invited two guest musicians: dEUS' Klaas Janszoons on violin and keyboards and Piet Jorens (Charles et les Lulus) for percussion and keyboards. The story of the movie is tres simple: a farmer decides to murder his wife to be with another woman (from the city). When the moment is there, he changes his mind, because he still loves her. He tries to make up with her during a day of joy in the city, and after everything is over and dealt with, they return to their house in the country. Fate seems to end their happiness during this trip back, but after all they live happily ever after. The music score, created almost 70 years after the completion of the movie, fits the images quite naturally. At the start you try to keep an eye at both the movie and the musicians, but as the movie progresses, your attention is automatically drawn to the screen more and more. This is partially caused by the fact that, except for some funny moments, nothing really visionally spectacular happens in the orchestra space: the musicians are concentrated and are constantly looking at each other and the screens. The soundtrack itself is very varying and diverse. During many moments it effectively is a radio play, because the produced sounds exactly reflect the images. An example of this is when the farmer and his wife walk in the very crowded streets of the city. The musicians create a cacaphonia of sounds by talking, laughing, screaming, hitting instruments, blowing horns etc. simultaneously. At other times you can almost discern complete songs, sometimes with vocals but mostly only instrumental. As a result of this, Stef is not the only center of attention (as he more or less is during Moondog Jr.'s normal performances), but all members receive the same amount of attention. It is hard to give a detailed description on the music: you simply have to see it yourself to get a good impression. As for me: I really liked it very much. It is great to hear some completely new sounds from the Moondogs after having seen many live shows. I look forward to the day the Sunrise soundtrack is released on cd, because I think the music is interesting enough to listen to, even without the images. After the show and outside the theatre, I had a short talk with Tom (Pintens). He told me some interesting new things with respect to the future of Moondog Jr. After one or two more performances, the Sunrise project will come to an end, but not before the soundtrack is recorded on cd. When the recording session will actually happen is not clear at the moment. If it won't take place during the next week, it will be much later. As from august 20, the activities for Moondog Jr. will be at a very low level, since Tom (and Benjamin of course) will pay all attention to Flowers For Breakfast. In Holland, their new single is released in the week of august 12, and the album will follow shortly. Flowers For Breakfast will tour for some period, visiting Holland, Belgium and France amongst others. In Holland they will do at least four shows: the Lowlands festival at the end of august, the Crossing Border festival early september, in the Melkweg (Amsterdam), and in the Effenaar (Eindhoven). BTW: Sunrise can NOT be seen during the Lowlands festival, although there was talk of it for some time. We also talked about the Moondog Jr. homepage. Tom had seen it, and found it very interesting. To keep up with the latest news concerning the band, Tom gave me his home address and phone number. |
