Nighttown, Rotterdam, Netherlands 05/07/96
Supported by Ed de Vos/Maelstrom
by PAUL VAN GORP

Right before the shows at the Torhout and Werchter festivals in Belgium, Moondog Jr. did kind of a warm up show in Nighttown in Rotterdam. Earlier this year the band (minus Aarich) already appeared in Nighttown during Bazar Curieux, where they showed up with Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung. This time, these other fine Antwerp musicians didn't perform as support act. In stead, Ed de Vos dueted with his standup bass. While he was playing the instrument, he was backed up by prerecorded compositions on tape and other electronic sound effects. Although this was not the most perfect ambiance with the audience murmurring through the music, he did a very fine job. According to the flyer, which was handed out at the entrance, his performance consisted of the compositions Nonozembla, Einder, Pinokkio, Bezemstelen, Strot, Nachtschade and Maelstrom.

Between 10.10pm and 0.00am, Moondog Jr. took the stage and performed the following songs (quoted titles are guesses):

Ice guitars
'Switchblade'
Ragdoll blues
Moondance
Habibi Ouldi
TV song
Bombo
Jacky
Jintro & the great luna
Ricochet
Waiting 'til you're gone
? (Stef solo)
Cachita
Moondog
Love is a heavy brick
Spike Smiths' for all lost goods
Shall I let this good man in
'Singing from my window' (song about Hank Williams)
Jo's wine song
-----------------
The messenger (a Daniel Lanois cover)
? (instrumental)
-----------------
Big black TV cat
Love 609

Nothing really special happened during the show, compared to the shows earlier this year together with the anarchists. Nevertheless, it was quite good; it seemed that all attention was being paid to the music. Especially the first part seemed like a formula 1 race: the band really paced through the setlist with almost no interuption. 'Moondance' was one of the highlights, because of it's prolonged rendition.

'The ricochet' saw one or two additional verses at the start and the end of the song, which made it even more interesting and obscure. After this, 'Waiting 'til you're gone' (besides 'The messenger') were the absolute climaxes in this show. I don't know why, but I'm getting to like this song more and more. It was followed by a song (I guess it's a cover), during which Stef was only accompanied by his own guitar playing. Later on, another entirely new song (with some lines about Hank Williams) was done.

The beautiful and excellent 'The messenger' opened the first encore, and it was followed by some funny little instrumental tune. It sounded like typical cartoon music to me. This song, which also made me think of 'Love 609', was done with great pleasure.

'Big black tv cat' and 'Love 609' topped off this show. All in all it was a fine night, but at the same time I must admit that I've seen more appealing performances by them. I'm curious if and how they will change the setlist for the North Sea Jazz Festival (at July 14).

Before the show, I was wondering if Stef would give some subtle hints about him planning to leave dEUS, but (as could be expected) this didn't happen. However, my suspisions (partly based on the rumours on the dEUS mailing list), turned out to be the truth, because this decision was made public during the Torhout/Werchter festival in the next two days. I fear that it will have a very negative effect on dEUS' music, but a positive consequence is that Stef now has all the opportunities to concentrate on Moondog Jr., so hopefully we can expect to hear more of its delicious music.
