Yesterday night I succeeded in witnessing the Zita Swoon rehearsals here in Eindhoven. Last week I went to see them a few times, but they were not in. I arrived at about 10.30pm. The band was also just in. Stef, Tom and Tomas were singing a Kiss My Jazz song in the hall. After this, Tomas went to listen to a new demotape of Think of One, which had been freshly mixed by Tom. I heard three songs which sounded ok to me. Although I don't know any of the old material, Tomas remarked that there was some shift in style. To me, the new songs sounded like a mix between (Zorn's) Masada and X-Legged Sally (where did I hear that name before?). Now, the band was ready to go rehearse in the big hall. I took my position at the side and listened to new material. For about one hour, they played two or three new songs. I asked Tom if this was intended for the 'Helden' album or for the dance performance. He said that nobody did know at the moment; everything was possible. The second song, probably called 'Circumstances', was just great. It reminded me a lot of 'The Ricochet' (not the Faith No More song; btw: Faith No More have split this week, but this is not yet officially known). They performed 'Circumstances' about four times, with some changes in each version. At some point, there was a big instrument change, which resulted in Stef playing the bass and Tomas playing drums. They did a great job. The rehearsals were also witnessed by the two dancers involved in the project. The first was a Japanese girl, whose name I unfortunately can not remember. She didn't actually dance last night, since she found it too cold and she had some backpains. The other dancer was Koen van den ????, the person we all know as the cross-dressed guy from the 'Roses'-video and from the dance group performance at some of the dEUS-gigs last year. He did some great improvised dancing during these rehearsals. At one point in time, he and Bjorn tried to make it impossible for Tom to play his guitar by jumping in his neck and hanging onto his guitar. They did not succeed. The music part of the evening was finished by 15 minutes of big fun time. First, the band gave a newly arranged rendition of 'All along the watchtower'. In this hilaric mood, 'Lola' (Kinks) followed and a part of a Blues Explosion song topped it off. After this, we looked at an old Italian black and white movie. It was quite a long movie, surely for some of the viewers: Bjorn, Tom and Tomas left and played some more in the hall; Stef fell asleep in front of the screen. In the end, the Japanese girl and I were the only remaining, and at the same time, we came to the conclusion that the movie was too long. We talked for some minutes and at about 3.15am I decided it was time to go. But not after having informed about when the next rehearsals would be, so that I can visit them again. |
