SESSIE IN DE SUPERMARKT Van tevoren hadden we zitten filosoferen. Vrijdagmiddag, voeten op de rand van het bureau, een schuimig bekertje cappucino binnen handbereik. 'Het leuke aan die band is dat ze zo Europees beïnvloed zijn,' was mijn eerste wijsneuzerige opmerking. 'Jaques Brel, Bertold Brecht, Kurt Weill...'. 'Die band' is Zita Swoon uit Antwerpen, de centrale man is Stef Kamil Carlens. We leerden hem 5 jaar geleden kennen als 1 van de mannen achter die opvallende band dEUS. Met Zita Swoon maakt hij popmuziek die niets te maken lijkt te hebben met de grote Amerikaanse hitindustrie en vooral associaties oproept met mistige havencafé's aan de Scheldekade. 'Laten we vroeg naar Antwerpen gaan. Dan kunnen we van die grauwe beelden draaien die zo bij zijn mystieke muziek passen.' Voor de sessie zocht Stef niet een locatie in de havenbuurt. Of we ons wilden melden in het hartje van de stad, aan de Groenmarkt. Stef neemt ons mee naar de Grand Bazaar, een winkelcentrum dat vlekkeloos naar het voorbeeld van de Amerikaanse shopping malls werd nagebouwd. In de kelder is daar de GB-supermarkt. Tussen de verse groenten en de minder verse vis installeren de 5 Zita Swoon-leden hun apparatuur. Het is zaterdagmiddag, en de meeste klanten lijken meer opgewonden over het feit dat de patatten niet meer oner handbereik liggen dan dat daar een complete band 3 prachtige liedjes staat te spelen. Jan Douwe geeft gedwee de 5 kilozakken aardappels door en ik mag voor één keer met een DV-cameraatje achter de visbalie om over de zalmmoten en sprot heen drummer Aarich Jespers en bassist Thomas de Smet te filmen. De zo verlegen ogende Stef werpt alle schroom van zich af en zingt uit volle borst Our Daily Reminders. Voor het interview mogen we een prachtig appartement van een bevriende architect gebruiken. Achter de grote ramen stroomt de Schelde. 'Wat is je favoriete album?' vraagt Jan Douwe. Stef laat een lange pauze vallen. Eén favorite plaat is zo twee-dimensionaal, zie je Stef denken. Hij vindt zo veel platen schoon. 'Jaques Brel?' probeert Jan Douwe. Scott Walker? Een heel onbekend orkest uit 1950? Tom Waits misschien? 'Iets van Queen...' mompelt Stef. Friday afternoon, feet on the desk, a foamy cup of cappucino within reach. 'The good thing about that band is that they're so European influenced,' was my first conceited remark. 'Jaques Brel, Bertold Brecht, Kurt Weill...'. 'That band' is Zita Swoon from Antwerp, the main man in Stef Kamil Carlens. We got to know him 5 years ago as one of the men of that striking band, dEUS. With Zita Swoon he makes popmusic that seems to have nothing in common with the big, American hit-industry and especially recalls associations with foggy harbour-café's at the Scheldekade. 'Let's go early to Antwerp. Then we can film those grey images that fit his mystical music so well.' Stef didn't look for a location in the harbour-quarter for the session. If we wanted to report ourselves in the heart of the city, in the Groenmarkt. Stef takes us to the Grand Bazaar, a shopping-centre that spotlessly has been build after American shopping malls-examples. In the basement there, is a the GB-supermarket. Between the fresh vegetables and not so fresh fish, the 5 Zita Swoon-members install their equipment. It is saturday afternoon, and most costumers seem more excited about the fact that the chips aren't within reach anymore, than that a whole band is playing 3 beautiful songs there. Jan Douwe meekly passes the 5-kilo bags of potatoes by, and for one time i may behind the fish-counter with a little DV-camera to film drummer Aarich Jespers and bassist Thomas de Smet over the salmon-fillets and sprat. The shy looking Stef throws off all the diffidence and sings lustily Our Daily Reminders. For the interview we can use the beautiful apartment of a befriended architect. Behind the big windows the Schelde flows. 'What is your favorite album?' Jan Douwe asks. Stef drops a long break. You see Stef thinking: One favorite record is so two-dimensional. He finds so many albums beautiful. 'Jaques Brel?' tries Jan Douwe. Scott Walker? A very unknown band from 1950? Tom Waits maybe? 'Something by Queen...' mutters Stef. 'No, i think my all time favorite record is AC/DC's Highway To Hell'.
